His parents were sceptical, as were his classmates \u2013 yet Tim Blankenhorn decided to train in road construction after leaving school. Childhood dream: training as a road builder<\/h2>\r\n

Becoming a road builder has always been Tim’s dream. Even as a young boy, he was magically drawn to construction sites. However, when he decided to train as a road builder after completing his vocational baccalaureate, his parents and classmates were initially sceptical. Too many negative stereotypes still linger in people’s minds. The work is dirty, bad for your back, and if you don’t drink alcohol, you don’t belong on the team.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div> \r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n <\/section>\n\n

Tim Blankenhorn can only smile wearily at such prejudices. Alcohol is now banned on construction sites, and much of the most physically demanding work is done by machines. In general, unlike in previous years, the focus today is more on digitalisation and compliance with regulations.<\/p>\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div> \r\n <\/div> \r\n <\/div> \r\n <\/section>\n\n

But does vocational school provide young road builders with the necessary skills for their profession? Tim sees room for improvement here. At school, much of what is currently taught is more relevant to site managers. Other topics, such as concrete bearing rings, are completely missing, as Tim reports.<\/p>\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div> \r\n <\/div> \r\n <\/div> \r\n <\/section>\n\n \r\n

Important knowledge is often lacking<\/h2>\r\n

This becomes a problem especially when an apprentice from a small or medium-sized company changes employers and is then confronted with tasks that he or she was never able to learn because the company where he or she trained did not offer the relevant services. Tim believes that vocational schools have a duty to fill these gaps.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div> \r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n <\/section>\n\n

Despite the limitations he mentioned, Tim is still happy with his career choice. His training also paved the way for him to pursue a dual degree programme and become a technician.
