Childhood dream: training as a road builder
Becoming a road builder has always been Tim’s dream. Even as a young boy, he was magically drawn to construction sites. However, when he decided to train as a road builder after completing his vocational baccalaureate, his parents and classmates were initially sceptical. Too many negative stereotypes still linger in people’s minds. The work is dirty, bad for your back, and if you don’t drink alcohol, you don’t belong on the team.
The expert interview on training in road construction
Tim Blankenhorn can only smile wearily at such prejudices. Alcohol is now banned on construction sites, and much of the most physically demanding work is done by machines. In general, unlike in previous years, the focus today is more on digitalisation and compliance with regulations.
Too much theory? What’s going wrong in vocational schools
But does vocational school provide young road builders with the necessary skills for their profession? Tim sees room for improvement here. At school, much of what is currently taught is more relevant to site managers. Other topics, such as concrete bearing rings, are completely missing, as Tim reports.

Important knowledge is often lacking
This becomes a problem especially when an apprentice from a small or medium-sized company changes employers and is then confronted with tasks that he or she was never able to learn because the company where he or she trained did not offer the relevant services. Tim believes that vocational schools have a duty to fill these gaps.
How companies can close knowledge gaps among employees
With SuperSiteSkills, construction companies can close these gaps. The training platform offers theoretically sound, practical training on relevant topics from the world of asphalt and civil engineering. This allows you to optimally prepare your trainees for practical work on the construction site or fill knowledge gaps among new colleagues.

Successfully filling vacant training positions
But how can young people be persuaded to train as road builders? To attract new employees, it is no longer enough to place a job advertisement and wait for applications to come in. Construction companies need to go where their potential employees are. Robin Strohäker already revealed how this can be achieved at Asphalt Talks.
